(Surrey, BC: 24 Jeth, Nanakshahi 557 | June 6, 2025 CE) – Sikhs across the country are outraged that PM Carney has decided to invite Narendra Modi to attend the G7—less than two years after India orchestrated the assassination of Shaheed Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, BC. This is not only a poor policy decision, it is a deeply offensive message to Sikhs in Canada as these meetings will take place almost two years to the day Bhai Hardeep Singh was assassinated on Canadian soil by agents of the Government of India.

Bhai Hardeep Singh was not just a prominent Sikh leader in Canada. He was a beloved member of our community, a friend to many, and someone who stood openly and courageously for Sikh rights. His murder was not an isolated act—it was part of a well-documented campaign of transnational repression linked to the highest levels of the Indian government. Active members of our community continue to receive warnings from Canadian intelligence agencies that their lives are still at risk. In this context, to invite the man who taunted Canada by openly boasting about extrajudicial killings by declaring that his India “enters the homes of its enemies and kills them” is deeply disturbing.

Inviting Indian officials to this country while the Indian state continues to target Canadian citizens, sends a clear message: Sikhs are not truly part of the Canadian fabric. The assassination of a Sikh leader in Canada is not seen as an attack on Canada. Trade matters more than justice. Canada’s top intelligence and security officials have confirmed that senior Indian government figures—including Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah—oversaw and coordinated violent operations in Canada. To normalize relations with India—without a shred of accountability—is to reward a foreign government for killing a Canadian on Canadian soil and threatening countless more. It is an insult to Bhai Hardeep Singh’s memory. It is an insult to our community. And it is a threat to Canadian institutions.

Bhai Moninder Singh, National Spokesperson of Sikh Federation (Canada), commented:

“The Government of India has shown that it is not a partner to Canada. It has orchestrated a state-backed campaign of transnational repression that includes the assassination of Shaheed Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia—a Sikh community leader and Canadian citizen brutally murdered outside his gurdwara in broad daylight. This was not an isolated incident, but part of a coordinated effort to silence dissent and terrorize our community. Inviting Modi to Canada despite India's repeated refusal to cooperate with investigations is an insult to Sikhs in Canada and an ongoing threat to Canadian institutions.”

We call on all on the Government of Canada to take the following actions without delay:

Publicly reaffirm that Canada will demand accountability from India for its documented interference, violence, and assassination plots in Canada.

Rescind Modi's invitation to the G7 or any official Canadian forums unless and until India fully cooperates with ongoing criminal investigations and makes real reforms—ending repression, halting disinformation, and upholding human rights.
Enact targeted sanctions against Indian officials, including Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, who are credibly linked to orchestrating this campaign of violence and foreign interference.
